ArticleHow to Buy the Best New CPU How to master the tech specs and select a processor that meets your needs Computer Shopper Not too long ago, comparing PC processors was as straightforward as sizing up car engines: A higher-megahertz CPU would yield a faster PC, just as a V8 with more horsepower would make for a speedier car. All a PC shopper needed to know, for instance, was that a 400MHz processor was faster than a 333MHz chip.
As processor speeds progressed into the gigahertz range, naming schemes became increasingly inscrutable. And the situation got even more complex when multicore chips hit the scene. Today, comparing processors is no longer a matter of simply finding a CPU with the highest clock speed. You need to weigh specs like the number of processing cores, system bus speed, and the amount of Level 2 (L2) cache, as well as determine whether you'll want 64-bit processing capabilities or need to overclock your CPU. Whether you're gunning to upgrade your processor or looking for a brand-new desktop with the right CPU for your needs, this guide will help you understand all of today's options. How to Buy the Best New CPUWhy You Need Dual Core The most fundamental change in today's processors is the move to multiple cores—essentially putting more than one processor in a single chip. Rather than increasing processor performance by boosting the clock speed, which can also increase heat output and power consumption, both AMD and Intel have turbocharged performance with multicore designs. The AMD Athlon 64 X2 and Intel Core 2 Duo processors contain a pair of cores, which speeds operations when multitasking or when running multicore-aware programs. Intel has gone a step further with the Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Extreme QX series, which each feature a whopping four cores in a single processor. AMD plans to follow suit with its Phenom CPU, due out later this year. (AMD currently offers the stopgap Quad FX solution for the quad-core market, which puts a pair of tweaked dual-core Athlon 64 FX processors on a single motherboard.) The performance benefit you'll see from multiple cores depends on the kind of software you use and how you use it. Applications and games that aren't designed to be multithreaded—that is, to support multiple cores—will only take advantage of one of your processor's cores. But dual cores can still provide a performance increase for most users, since the background tasks that Windows runs can use the second core, offering a marginal increase in performance and a noticeable increase in responsiveness. The benefits of a second core become obvious when you're multitasking—browsing the Web while converting video for a portable media player, for instance. Currently, applications like Nero Recode and Pinnacle Studio 11 support only two cores. Just a few programs, such as the Sony Vegas 7.0 video editor, Microsoft Flight Simulator X SP1, and Supreme Commander, take full advantage of quad-core processors. Sony Vegas can render video on a Core 2 Quad processor in less than one-third the time it takes to render the same video on a similar single-core chip. Unless you're buying a low-end notebook, the only category in which single-core chips are still common, you'll find most new PCs today are equipped with at least dual-core processors. For now, though, unless you're a hard-core gamer or a heavy user of video-editing applications, the only reason to choose a quad-core processor is as an investment for the future. |
